Chipped or Fractured Teeth

Chipped teeth account for the majority of dental emergencies. Chips can usually be fixed by reattaching the broken piece or by placing a tooth-colored filling. If a significant portion of the tooth is broken off, an artificial crown may be needed to restore the tooth. If cracks extend into the root of a tooth, a root canal and a full-coverage crown may be needed to restore function to the tooth or the tooth may require extraction.

Dislodged Teeth

Sometimes a tooth may be pushed sideways out of its socket. The dentist can often reposition and stabilize your tooth. Root canal treatment is usually needed for adults whose permanent teeth have been dislodged and should be started a few days following the injury.

Knocked-Out Teeth

Perhaps one of the scariest feelings is when a tooth is knocked out of the mouth. Don’t panic! Handle the tooth gently and quickly and carefully rinse it in water. Do not brush or attempt to the clean the tooth in any other way. The less time a tooth is out of its socket, the better chance there is that your dentist can save it. If the affected tooth is a baby tooth, you should not attempt to save it. If we think the tooth can be saved, your Dahlgren dentist will place a stabilizing splint on the tooth for several weeks. A tooth canal may be necessary, based on the condition of the roots.

Root Fractures

An injury to the tooth cause sometimes cause a horizontal root fracture, which can affect the overall health of the tooth. The closer the fracture is to the root tip, the better chance your dentist will have at repairing the tooth. Fractures along the gum line prove more difficult to repair. To repair a tooth with a horizontal root fracture, your dentist may need to stabilize the tooth with a splint for best results.

Root Resorption

When your teeth sustains a traumatic injury, your body may try to reject it, even if you’ve received treatment to repair the tooth. Resorption can occur in several parts of the tooth, including the pulp, the enamel or in the root. Make sure to regularly visit our office after a tooth injury to make sure your tooth is healing properly.

EMERGENCY DENTAL CARE

Traumatic Dental Injuries in Children

Chipped baby teeth can be aesthetically restored and, in rare cases, dislodged baby teeth can be repaired. Attempting to save knocked out baby teeth, however, should be avoided. Replanted baby teeth can cause severe damage to the permanent teeth. Our dentist will carefully monitor permanent teeth affected by dental trauma to ensure that the teeth continue to grow as they should.
