Have you avoided the dentist because you are afraid or stressed out, even just thinking about it? Would you rather endure a toothache than step foot in a dentist’s office? Many people have fears and anxiety about going to the dentist that they prefer not to have any treatment. Sedation dentistry enables individuals too afraid to go to the dentist to receive the dental care they need while avoiding the common apprehension known as dental phobia.

At Dahlgren Dental, we are pleased to offer sedation dentistry to help patients who need an extra level of comfort when visiting the dentist. In these cases, sedation may be necessary for more than just surgical procedures. There’s no shame in requesting sedation services with us. With several different forms of sedation available, patients can receive dental sedation for everything from more complex procedures to regular teeth cleanings.

Patients Who Benefit From Sedation Dentistry Have:

  • A hard time sitting still for long periods of time

  • A hard time getting and staying numb from anesthetics

  • Dental anxiety or fear

  • Dental phobia

  • Sensitive gag reflex

  • Multiple treatments to be performed at once

  • Fear or anxiety related to dental instruments, sounds and smells

  • Childhood trauma from the dentist

How Sedatives Are Administered

  • Inhalation – Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the most common form of sedation. Laughing gas is a good choice for those with mild to moderate dental anxiety. During your treatment, the dentist places a mask over your mouth. Breathing in the Nitrous oxide from the mask will help you to feel relaxed, though you will still be awake. Another benefit of the gas is that the effects dissipate quickly once the mask is removed.
  • Oral – Another common form of sedation is oral sedation for those with mild to moderate dental phobia. Oral sedation is easy and painless. you will be given a prescription pill, which you will need to take an hour or two before your appointment, per your dentist’s instructions. By the time of your appointment, the effects of the pill will take effect, helping you feel relaxed and a bit sleepy.
